Getting married in protest
It would not be the first marriage proposal aided along by a few drinks, there is however little else that's ordinary regarding the impending nuptials of comedians Rhys Nicholson, from Newcastle, and Zoe Coombs Marr. They're going to marry on the Comedy Festival club on Friday night, the day before the Barry Awards are held in the same venue. Both Coombs Marr and Nicholson are nominated for the Barry, awarded to the best show of Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
"We'll be back at Max Watt's for the honeymoon," Nicholson says.
These folks were engaged last August in Edinburgh when Nicholson located Coombs Marr's dressing room, where she was still in character as her alter ego, Dave, complete with his trademark patchy beard.
"I was at a nice suit and I think we checked out each other within the mirror and said we glance like the most f ed up gay wedding we've ever seen," Nicholson says.
They ran out drinking and subsequently day Coombs Marr put the hard word on Nicholson.
"She was like, 'I've been thinking about it, I think we should get married'. And we all had to tell our partners. My partner was in Edinburgh together with his mother and that he had to let her know his partner was marriage to a woman."
Nicholson and Coombs Marr are firm friends, no more. Both have other partners. Both are gay. They're marriage to highlight the reality that it is still illegal to enable them to marry individuals they love.
"It's a radical act, and not that often you get the opportunity to do this," Coombs Marr says.
"I love weddings, it's really a big event to get a family and this is serious stuff, but at the same time, we can't do it and we're queer, and we have a good reputation for making mockeries of shit that excludes us."
Mostly, they are met with support, but there are a few objectors. "We had this person on Twitter yesterday saying, 'you're ripping off something that you want, this is a good way to attempt it'," Nicholson says.
"And we were like, 'it is definitely, because it's about visibility'.

It's unclear who'll function as the bride about the night, but at Thursday's photo shoot Coombs Marr wore the white dress as Nicholson helped her become Dave.
"This 's what marriage is about, isn't it, knowing a person to hold your baggie of hair as you stick on your own beard?"
This has been a breakout year for Coombs Marr, who's hotly tipped to win the Barry. She heads to Ny straight as soon as the comedy festival to start work on a show with Adrienne Truscott and Ursula Martinez.
The ceremony reaches Max Watt's this Friday at 11.30pm. Tickets are $25 at the door, some profits goes to national LGBTI youth advocacy organisation Minus18.
